Extractive Metallurgy of Copper 4th ed.

Summary:
This new edition has been extensively revised and updated since the 3rd edition published in 1994. It contains an even greater depth of industrial information, focussing on how copper metal is extracted from ore and scrap, and how this extraction could be made more efficient. Modern high intensity smelting processes are presented in detail, specifically flash, Contop, Isasmelt, Noranda, Teniente and direct-to-blister smelting. Considerable attention is paid to the control of SO2 emissions and manufacture of H2SO4. Recent developments in electrorefining, particularly stainless steel cathode technology are examined. Navegando me encontre con esta excelente pagina realizada por el Instituto de Geografia de la Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. La pagina trata topicos de la geomorfologia dinamica y climatica tales como los agentes y procesos y la geomorfologia de distintos ambientes, como fluvial, litoral, etc.

El diseño esta muy bueno, se acompañan los textos con fotografias, ademas, en español.

Hola, volvemos con dos interesantes aportes, el primero se trata de un paper acerca de los porfidos cupriferos, recien salido de horno. Este articulo esta contenido en el ultimo volumen de la Economic Geology y se trata de una especie de review acerca del estado del arte en el estudio de los porfidos cupriferos realizado por Sillitoe. Un articulo de lectura obligada para todos aquellos que les guste la geologia economica.

Terremotos

Hace rato que no actualizaba este blog, pero sin lugar a dudas, el terremoto recién pasado en Chile hace necesario esto, ya que hay varios temas dando vuelta en internet, que han adquirido el nivel de mitos en varios foros que he visitado en estos días, particularmente lo del el cambio en el eje terrestre o las predicciones acerca del terremoto.

Bueno, lo primero es lo primero: acerca de las predicciones.

He leído algunas predicciones, como la del "Mago Yin" y teorías dosmildoceanas que para el publico común son muy atractivas de creer.

Así también, a las horas del terremoto salio un articulo en terra en el que se aseguraba que u estudio realizado por expertos lo habría anticipado.

Vamos por parte.

Lo del supuesto mago no me lo creo para nada y ni siquiera lo voy a analizar, sin embargo, la respuesta o la información entregada por el sismólogo consultado en la misma noticia a mi parecer es deficiente, ya que el estudio ya se encontraba publicado (es más, se había enviado a revisión en Marzo del 2007.

El articulo en si (publicado en Physics of the Earth & Planetary Interiors, Vol. 175, issues 1-2, pp. 78-85) concluye que la parte sur del gap Concepción-Constitución ha acumulado un déficit de deslizamiento que es más que suficiente para producir un gran terremoto de magnitud 8.0-8.5, aproximadamente. Esto es, por supuesto, el peor escenario y es necesario que sea refinado en trabajos adicionales.

Pero el articulo no menciona una fecha exacta, un año o un mes, por lo que el titulo de la noticia de terra es un tanto alarmista.

Por otro lado, tenemos lo del cambio en el angulo de rotación de la tierra a partir del terremoto de Chile. Esto es totalmente cierto, me declaraba ignorante en el tema, pero si, se han registrado modificaciones al eje terrestre con varios terremotos, Chile 2010, Indonesia 2004, Chile 1960, etc., claro que son cambios prácticamente imperceptibles y solo demostrables a partir de modelos computacionales. La explicación de este fenómeno es simple, tal desplazamiento de masa en la zona de subducción tiene una respuesta a nivel planetario. La tierra, luego del terremoto trata de volver al equilibrio, y como hace esto, modificando el eje terrestre con respecto a la nueva distribución de masa, es lo que los expertos denominan efecto "ice-skater".

Navengando por el internerd me tope con un blog muy similar a este. Se trata de "911geo", el cual es un sitio argentino, realizado por unos estudiantes de geologia del pais vecino. En palabras de los autores:

"Muchos de ustedes, estan agobiados por no tener las herramientas mo la info para seguir educandose, o estan lejos, perdieron los contactos,my no saben como seguir adelante… Ahora estamos aqui para compartir datos y ayudarnos! El conocimiento es de la humanidad y debe ser compartido por todos! Si conoces a alguien que necesite informacion pasale la direccion de este sitio o envianos cosas utiles a nuestro mail que le puedan ser utiles a otros!!!!"

El sitio cuenta con varios documentos que no estan en geolibros, sin embargo, no se encuentra la cantidad de la que se dispone aca. En fin, hay varios aportes interesantes, como libros de geomorfologia, paleontologia, geologia de Argentina y mapas geologicos de parte de ese pais.

Hola a tod@s, desde que empece este blog me han pedido cosas en español, el numero de libros en nuestro idioma es muy escaso, y los que existen actualmente son antiguos y a veces, demasiado basicos. Navegando por mi HD, me di cuenta de que tenia un libro (que encontre surfeando por la web) que, si bien tiene 17 años desde su publicacion original, es "relativamente nuevo".

Se trata de el libro "Sedimentologia" de Alfredo Arche, un viejo conocido para todos nosotros, para los que utilizaron su libro de estratigrafia vol 1 & 2. Este libro es un scan a dos paginas por hoja de una fotocopia (al parecer), pese a esto, tiene una buena calidad que no dificulta para nada la lectura, las ilustraciones tambien estan ok, asi que, a bajarlo y disfrutarlo!

Gracias al desinteresado aporte de Raulminerock, les puedo traer un nuevo libro en español, si bien no es algo geologico, si tiene relacion con mineria y la ingenieria que se realiza en ellas. Seguramente a los geologos de minas o a los ingenieros geologos (y por que no, a los ingenieros tambien) les vendra de perilla este libro, y por que no, a toda la comunidad que visita este humilde blog.

Andean Geology

Hola a todos, esta vez no traigo libros, pero si una muy buena noticia para los geologos y estudiantes de geologia. Se trata de Andean Geology (antes Revista Geologica de Chile); en un post anterior hable sobre esto y de que en el sitio del SERNAGEOMIN se encontraba esta revista hasta el año 2000 en adelante. Al tratar de descargar el ultimo numero de Andean Geology, me he encontrado con la sorpresa que en la pagina se encuentran TODOS los numeros de la Revista Geologica de Chile, desde el Nº 1 de 1974 hasta el Nº2 del Vol. 36 del año 2009.

Encuentro que esto es muy beneficioso para toda la comunidad geocientifica, asi que....buena caza!

Hola a todos, les traigo una novedad, se trata de Nature Geoscience, un nuevo journal editado por a Nature Publishing Group y que tiene como centro, las ciencias de la tierra. Esta relativa, nueva revista, viene siendo publicada desde el 2008, sin embargo, pongo a su disposicion los numeros desde Enero a Junio del presente año. Espero que disfruten esta publicacion. Navegando por paginas me he tropezado con un software un

poco inusual. Se trata de Winkarst, el cual es un programa para realizar mapeos en cavernas.

The program enables the user to visualize the cave in three dimensional space and provide information as to the quality of the survey. The user can display, print and export to other computer applications various representations of the cave. WinKarst is undoubtedly the easiest and most powerful software available to map caves.

Key WinKarst Highlights.
> Integrated cave survey editor. Unlike some cave survey programs, WinKarst has an integrated editor. In an integrated environment the user can edit the survey without saving the file to the hard disk. Not only is the considerably faster, it enables trial and error solutions to be explored for correcting errors without corrupting the permanent record on disk. The editor can be invoked by double clicking on caves, surveys or stations in the graphical view and then the editor automatically opens to the selected object. The editor has two methods to view shot data, organized by survey and organized by a single connecting station. Because the entire cave survey is held in memory, the user can obtain information about any cave, survey, station or property within the data, regardless of with file on the hard disk it came from. The has next station prediction, search for data items, cut and paste, link station warnings and data bound checking. For surveys with fore and back sights, corrected backsights are automatically identified and allowed.
> Morphed Sketches. Display up to 100 images tied to the line plot of the cave survey. PNG image format files are read in using the integrated editor and at least two stations locations are registered in the image before the program can display the image. When more than two stations are registered, then the image can be morphed to exactly match the line plot. The background color of the image is transparent and a composite view is created where the images overlap.
> Multiple File Formats. WinKarst can read and write SMAPS SEF format as well as each of the COMPASS formats, MAK, DAT and PLT. Keep your favorite survey editor and view the results in WinKarst. WinKarst can also import GPS data as WayPoint+ or Garmin formats and import station property information in dBaseIV format exported from a database program such as Microsoft Acess.
> Background Maps. Tile together multiple GeoTiff images for cave systems that cross 7.5 minute map boundaries. Large scale topographical or district maps can be scanned and displayed as a background image to the entire cave system. In this case, two intersections of either the UTM or lat/long grid register the image through control points. Images are displayed in color of the original image. GeoTiff images are automatically placed.
> Merged Digital Elevation Data. WinKarst is the only cave survey program that automatically merges DEM data with the survey. No clumsy third party software or extra steps required. The user can display the amount of overburden for stations within a DEM or plot elevation contours. The mouse's position in longitude and latitude can be displayed in the status bar. > Automatic magnetic declination calculation when cave survey has a geographic reference point. The declination calculation is valid in the period from 1600 to 2005, anywhere on the Earth.
> Export your cave maps in either BMP, PNG, DXF, TXT, Garmin TRK and WPT formats, TXT and DBF spreadsheets or ERSI shapefile themes. BMP and PNG image export can be of any pixel dimension size. Exported files have been successfully imported into programs such as CorelDraw, AutoCAD, MS Word, DesignCAD, WayPoint+, TOPO!GPS, Bryce, MS Excel and MS Access. The DXF format includes the wall dimensioning, if enabled, to provide the important step up in drafting your cave map. The Garmin formats allow you to upload your line plot into your GPS unit for use in the field. The TXT or dBase DBF spreadsheet can be imported into a database program, e.g. Microsoft Access, for combining with all cave data needed for resource management. The ERSI shapefile themes include identity, caves, surveys, shots, stations and control points and can be view with ArcView or ArcExplorer.
> Three Dimensional Rose diagram. Like the traditional rose diagram, the density of survey shots at an azimuth are plotted on a circular diagram. In a three dimensional diagram, the radial distance on the diagram plots the inclination angles of the survey shots. Then at each intersection of an azimuth and inclination angle on the diagram, the color of the intersection indicates the frequency of shots that occur in the survey. The diagram can show bedding plane dip in addition to joint and fracture orientation.
> Vertical Passage Distribution diagram. The vertical extent of the cave is divided into 256 slices and the passage in each slice is totaled. The diagram displays a histogram of the slice totals. The individual peaks of the histogram are identified, labeled and colored. The coloring scheme is then applied to subsequent color by depth plots.
> Calculation of Strike and Dip. WinKarst can calculate the best fit strike and dip and apply it to level the cave's station and passage distribution. Often, a cave's development is governed by local geology characterized by a strike and dip. By leveling the cave's distribution, it is possible to determine where the cave is approaching the geologic limits.
> WinKarst provides the user with immediate access to many cave parameters and statistics. These items include cave length, extremes, shot count, station count, loop count, survey count, loop closure error, expected loop error, loop shot sequences, loop length, number of shots connecting to a station, the location of a station, the shortest distance of a station to the entrance, the length of a survey and much, much more.
> While viewing the cave plot, the mouse can be used to query stations, loops and surveys. Once selected, a dialog box will appear with information about the station, loop or survey. The box also gives the user the choice to open the survey editor prefixed to the selected object. The user can measure the distance between any two stations with the scale cursor. The inspector cursor causes station names to appear as floating hints above the line plot. The ruler cursor can measure the distance between any two stations.

Con grata sorpresa he descubierto que SERNAGEOMIN ha subido numeros de la Revista Geologica de Chile (actualmente Andean Geology) anteriores a 2007. En el sitio se encuentran disponibles, en forma de single PDF, los numeros desde el año 200 en adelante, por lo que aquellos que "compraron" la version electronica desde 1974-2004 podran actualizarla hasta el 2009, lo cual se agradece!.

En la pagina tambien se encuentran los abstracts (en prensa) de la proxima edicion, enlaces a la version electronica en scielo.cl, comite editor, instrucciones a los autores.

¿Biblia Geologica?

Hola a todos alla afuera, esta vez no traigo un libro sensu stricto, pero si algo que es muy util para los geologos. Muchas personas al hacer la practica se dan cuenta que los geologos de las empresas tienen recopilaciones, tamaño libreta, de distintos topicos de geologia, por ejemplo: tamaños de granos, triangulos de clasificacion, facies minerales, etc. Durante la carrera me he encontrado con muchas fotocopias de estos documentos de trabajo, sin embargo, alguien, al cual le agradezco mucho, me ha facilitado digamoslo burdamente: la biblia del geologo (ed: hahaha!).

Se trata de la AGI Data Sheet, la cual es un enorme compilado de datos variados de geologia, desde triangulos de streckeisen hasta como hacer un reporte de una mina, pasando por la tabla periodica y la geologia estructural. Esto viene como complemento a los anteriores post de cosas utiles para la libreta, pueden reemplazar todo eso....por esto!

Continuando con los aportes de mi amigo evil8432, me ha enviado esta enorme lista de libros y articulos sobre geología. Revisandonla, me he dado cuenta de que hay varios que ya eran parte de geolibros ( y que de seguro los saco de aca y los resubio jejeje!!), sin embargo, hay verdaderos tesoros entre esta lista tales como el encyclopedia of geology que ya la tenia hace años pero nunca habia subido.

Bueno amig@, por gentileza de evil8432 (nuevo colaborador de _Geolibros_), traigo en esta ocasion algunos programillas educativos referentes a las ciencias de la tierra. Bueno, cada programa tiene una breve descripcion de lo que es, que hace y como se instala, asi que por favor no me manden mensajes que no les resulta, ya que el mismo hizo las descripciones e instrucciones.....

Earth's Core

Es una especie de enciclopedia geológica que te pone al alcance de tu mano información sobre distintas rocas y elementos.

Concretamente, contiene información sobre más de 500 minerales, más de 100 gemas preciosas y semipreciosas, más de 100 rocas, casi 1.000 elementos de glosario y 116 elementos de la tabla periódica.

Todos los documentos se encuentran clasificados para un acceso rápido, aunque también dispone de un sistema de búsqueda.

Para utilizar Earth's Core necesitas:

Geologia de los salares

Algo comun de las depresiones preandinas y andinas es la precencia de salares, muy conocidos como atractivo turisticos por su valor paisajistico, sin embargo, estos cuerpos corresponden a depositos de sales y otros minerales industriales tales como el litio y el boro. Por otra parte, durante fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, Chile fue la primera potencia mundial en produccion de salitre (nitrato de sodio), sin embargo, el periodo de bonanza no duro tanto debido a que los alemanes lograron sintetizar este elemento, por lo que el negocio se fue a las pailas. Por otra parte, el origen de estos depositos de nitratos es todavia, materia en discusion ya que hay muchas teorias, desde netamente geoquimicas hasta algunas bastante fantasticas que hablan de guano de gaviota en abundancia.

Como aporte pongo a la disposicion del publico dos libros, un tanto antiguos, pero que han sido referencias obligatorias para todos aquellos que estudiaron o estudian estos depositos. Ambos fueron realizados por el USGS en cooperacion con el IIG (les dije que eran antiguos!! jajaja!)

Bueno, para la informacion de todos, la Revista Geologica de Chile ha cambiado su nombre por el de Andean Geology. A continuacion pongo un extracto del prefacion:

"Este cambio ocurre al mismo tiempo en que se estan haciendo grandes esfuerzos para lograr mayor eficiencia, cuando hay un incremento importante en la recepcion de manuscritos, cuando tanto editores como arbitros continuan brindando una gran colaboracion y cuando se esta preparando un sistema de edicion en linea.

Hay pocas revistas cientificas indexadas por ISI que esten especializadas en la geologia de los Andes y se espera que al tomar este papel en forma explicita, la revista aumentara el numero de articulos publicados y su indice de impacto, el que ha sido de 0,755 en promedio de los ultimos cinco años."

Se tiende a obtener un tratamiento balanceado de los conocimientos clásicos y de aquellos más modernos en geología estrcutural. Se pone especial énfasis en el uso de la proyección estereográfica, como un elemento auxiliar de primera importancia en el análisis estructural. _Efectivamente. aunque no se presenta un análisis formal de ésta, su uso esta implícito en varios de los capítulos. Sobre el Autor:
Hans Niemeyer Rubilar nació en Santiago de Chile en 1948. Recibió su título de geólogo en la Universidad de Chile en 1975. Obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de Paris VI en 1979. Su trabajo de tesis consistió en un estudio geológico estructural de la parte interna de los Alpes franco-italianos. Entre 1973 y 1980 ejerció como geólogo regional del Instituto de Investigaciones Geológicas, Chile. Ha publicado varias cartas geológicas de distintas regiones de Chile, bajo la tutela del Instituto de Investigaciones Geológicas y del Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería. Entre 1981 y 1990 se desempeño como profesor e investigador de la Universidad del Norte. Desde 1991 a 1995, trabajo como geólogo de exploraciones en la Cmpañía Minera Carolina de Michilla y en Codelco-Salvador. Desde 1996 en adelante es profesor asociado en la Universidad Católica del Norte, en donde dicta los cursos de Geología Estructural y Geología de Campo 2. En esta misma universidad ha dirigido una veintena de memorias de título y dos tesis de doctorado. Ha publicado una treintena de trabajos en revistas nacionales e internacionales, en todos los cuales ha participado íntegramente ya sea en su etapa de terreno, como en su elaboración y redacción posterior. Asimismo ha presentado más de cuarenta trabajos en congresos, una parte de ellos en conjunto con sus memoristas. Ha sido asesor en más de una decena de empresas mineras en el campo de la geología estructural, actividad que se ha plamado en más de cuarenta informes profesionales inéditos. Su actual tema de investigación versa sobre la geología estrucural, estratigrafía y paleogeografía de los terrenos paleozoicos en el norte de Chile.

Review:
El libro en si es la recopilacion y fusion de los antiguos textos guia de la clase de Geologia Estructural impartida por el autor en el departamento de geologia de la Universidad Catolica del Norte en un formato pequeño y comodo de leer. Se ha mejorado sustancialmente el aspecto respecto a los textos antiguos, agregandose ademas, capitulos nuevos como el de las bandas Kink y la parte de reologia. Tambien se han agregado algunas fotografias (en B&N) que ejemplifican algunos terminos tratados en el libro. Se ha agregado referencias al final de cada capitulo para poder profudizar los temas y un indice alfabetico que resulta muy como a la hora de buscar terminos especificos.

Esta completamente en español, lo que se agradece ya que es bastante escasa la literatura de esta rama de la geologia en nuestro idioma.

El precio tambien es muy conveniente, asi que recomiendo adquirirlo y NO PIRATEARLO (en serio).

Soils and groundwater are important natural resources that sustain life on Earth. In the last century, the enormous expansion of industrial and agricultural activities has led to an increased environmental pressure on these systems. Soils and groundwater are extremely important because they yield much of our water resources and sustain food production for humanity. Potassic Igneous Rocks and Associated Gold-Copper Mineralization (Lecture Notes in Earth Sciences)

Hola a todos, hace rato que no aparecia aqui, pero valio la pena ya que traigo 2 libracos que valen oro.

El primero es uno de los libros mas citados en la geologia del norte de Chile, se trata del Geologia del Norte Grande de Chile de Floreal Garcia, el cual es parte del primer symposium sobre el gesinclinal andino realizado por la Sociedad Geologica de Chile en 1962 y en donde aparecen caracterizadas la gran mayoria de las formaciones del norte de Chile, un libro de cabecera y que ha sido utilizado por muchos geologos e investigadores a lo largo de los años.

El segundo libro es uno muy util para los cursos de campo, asi como tambien para estratigrafia o sedimentologia, se trata del pequeño, pero valioso: The Field Description of Sedimentary Rocks de Maurice Tucker.

"The study of sedimentary rocks is often an exciting, challenging and rewarding occupation. However, to get the most out of these rocks, it is necessary to undertake precise and accurate fieldwork. The secret of successful fieldwork is a keen eye for detail and an enquiring mind. Be observant, see everything in the outcrop, then think about the things seen and look again. This book is intended to show how sedimentary rocks are tackled in the field and has been written for those with a geological background of at least first year university or equivalent.
At the outset, this book describes how the features of sedimentary rocks can be recorded in the field, particularly through the construction of graphic logs. The latter technique is widely used since it provides a means of recording all details in a handy form; further, from the data, trends through a sequence and differences between horizons readily become apparent. In succeeding chapters, the various sedimentary rock types, textures and structures are discussed as they can be described and measured in the field. Theory of the Earth

I have only read some of this book so far, but Dr. Anderson impressed me with his style in the first 3 pages. To study the earth he argues, why take a geocentric view? He begins with the constraints on accepted planetary formation theories and builds a model of what early earth could of looked like, subtley using the scientific method and asking and answering questions every step of the way. He draws on chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, every applicable branch of science to make his conjectures.

Phanerozoic Tectonic Evolution of the Circum-North Pacific

The Phanerozoic tectonic evolution of the Circum-North Pacific is recorded mainly in the orogenic collages of the Circum-North Pacific mountain belts that separate the North Pacific from the eastern part of the North Asian Craton and the western part of the North American Craton. These collages consist of tectonostratigraphic terranes that are composed of fragments of igneous arcs, accretionary-wedge and subduction-zone complexes, passive continental margins, and cratons; they are overlapped by continental-margin-arc and sedimentary-basin assemblages. The geologic history of the terranes and overlap assemblages is highly complex because of postaccretionary dismemberment and translation during strike-slip faulting that occurred subparallel to continental margins.We analyze the complex tectonics of this region by the following steps. (1) We assign tectonic environments for the orogenic collages from regional compilation and synthesis of stratigraphic and faunal data. The types of tectonic environments include cratonal, passive continental margin, metamorphosed continental margin, continental-margin arc, island arc, oceanic crust, seamount, ophiolite, accretionary wedge, subductionzone, turbidite basin, and metamorphic. (2) We make correlations between terranes. (3) We group coeval terranes into a single tectonic origin, for example, a single island arc or subduction zone. (4) We group igneous-arc and subduction- zone terranes, which are interpreted as being tectonically linked, into coeval, curvilinear arc/subduction-zone complexes. (5) We interpret the original positions of terranes, using geologic, faunal, and paleomagnetic data. (6) We construct the paths of tectonic migration. Six processes overlapping in time were responsible for most of the complexities of the collage of terranes and overlap assemblages around the Circum-North Pacific, as follows. (1) During the Late Proterozoic, Late Devonian, and Early Carboniferous, major periods of rifting occurred along the ancestral margins of present-day Northeast Asia and northwestern North America. The rifting resulted in the fragmentation of each continent and the formation of cratonal and passive continental-margin terranes that eventually migrated and accreted to other sites along the evolving margins of the original or adjacent continents. (2) From about the Late Triassic through the mid-Cretaceous, a succession of island arcs and tectonically paired subduction zones formed near the continental margins. (3) From about mainly the mid-Cretaceous through the present, a succession of igneous arcs and tectonically paired subduction zones formed along the continental margins. (4) From about the Jurassic to the present, oblique convergence and rotations caused orogenparallel sinistral and then dextral displacements within the upper-plate margins of cratons that have become Northeast Asia and North America. The oblique convergences and rotations resulted in the fragmentation, displacement, and duplication of formerly more nearly continuous arcs, subduction zones, and passive continental margins. These fragments were subsequently accreted along the expanding continental margins. (5) From the Early Jurassic through Tertiary, movement of the upper continental plates toward subduction zones resulted in strong plate coupling and accretion of the former island arcs and subduction zones to the continental margins. Accretions were accompanied and followed by crustal thickening, anatexis, metamorphism, and uplift. The accretions resulted in substantial growth of the North Asian and North American Continents. (6) During the middle and late Cenozoic, oblique to orthogonal convergence of the Pacifi c plate with present-day Alaska and Northeast Asia resulted in formation of the modern-day ring of volcanoes around the Circum-North Pacific. Oblique convergence between the Pacific plate and Alaska also resulted in major dextral-slip faulting in interior and southern Alaska and along the western part of the Aleutian-Wrangell arc. Associated with dextral-slip faulting was crustal extrusion of terranes from western Alaska into the Bering Sea.

Surviving a Tsunami—Lessons from Chile, Hawaii, and Japan

This report contains true stories that illustrate how to survive-and how not to survive-a tsunami. It is meant for people who live, work, or play along coasts that tsunamis may strike. Such coasts surround most of the Pacific Ocean but also include other areas, such as the shores of the Caribbean, eastern Canada, and the Mediterranean. Although many people call tsunamis “tidal waves,” they are not related to tides but are rather a series of waves, or “wave trains,” usually caused by earthquakes. Tsunamis have also been caused by the eruption of some coastal and island volcanoes, submarine landslides, and oceanic impacts of large meteorites. Tsunami waves can become more than 30 feet high as they come into shore and can rush miles inland across low-lying areas. The stories in this book were selected from interviews with people who survived a Pacific Ocean tsunami in 1960. Many of these people, including the nurse at right, contended with the waves near their source, along the coast of Chile. Others faced the tsunami many hours later in Hawaii and Japan. Most of the interviews were done decades later in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The stories provide a mixed bag of lessons about tsunami survival. Some illustrate actions that reliably saved lives-heeding natural warnings, abandoning belongings, and going promptly to high ground and staying there until the tsunami is really over. Others describe taking refuge in buildings or trees or floating on debris-tactics that had mixed results and can be recommended only as desperate acts.

Esta pagina es muy buena, ya que entrega modelos animados de las distintas estructuras que se encuentran en la tierra, desde principios basicos hasta reologia, pasando por fallas, pliegues, etc, hasta viajes virtuales.

En el ultimo tiempo he estado ausente de este blog debido a que estuve en un largo periodo de pruebas (como es usual), pero aprovechando un "gap" en la actividad academica, vuelvo con todo.

Durante el periodo de pruebas tuve que buscar cosas en internet para complementar la materia o tareas por ahi que dan. En esta aventura andaba y me tope con una pagina llamada "La Ciencia Para Todos"(que ya habia conocido hace tiempo) que nunca la habia tomado en cuenta como "cientifica", pero resulto ser bastante agradable y cientifica, por lo menos aclaro mi duda sobre un tema en especial, por eso coloco el link para que ustedes tambien puedan visitarla. En ella se encuentran libros online sobre varias ciencias, pero a mi me interesan las ciencias de la tiera (en HTML, pero andan unas copias en el emule de las mismas en PDF) :

Hola camaradas, como de costumbre, les traigo nuevos libros para que engrosen su coleccion y cultiven aun mas su mente....
Son solo dos, pero muy buenos, el primero es de geologia estructural en 3D jajaja!! y el otro es sobre yacimientos metaliferos gigantes...ambos en ingles. Estan muy buenos, especialmente el de los depositos metaliferos...bueno...ahi nos estamos viendo y wea!

Hola a todos los que visitan este rincon del internerd...jejee. Como me voy a terreno unos 10 dias, les dejare algunos libros para que se entretengan durante ese tiempo, hay dos de paleontologia (respuesta para un pedido que me llego del moderador del foro de GRINPACH), otro sobre la clasificacion de las rocas igneas (en realidad es el tipico boletin donde salen todos los triangulos de streckeisen) y finalmente un manual para geologia de campo (obviamente tiene todo...desde analisis de suelos hasta analisis geoquimicos, cosas que sirven otras que no...esta mas orientado a un ingeniero en geologia, o sea, pa los weas de la chile)

Desertificacion

Hola a todos, esta vez regreso, pero no para dejarles un libro, sino mas bien una pagina web que ha sido desarrollada por alumnos de la UCN, incluyendome, durante el transcurso de un seminario dictado en el departamento de geologia de esta universidad.

Este seminario, titulado "Construccion de un modulo de E-Learning: un ejemplo sobre la desertificacion del norte de Chile", trato, en parte, de investigacion sobre el tema (mediante libros, paginas web, papers, fotografias, etc.) debido a la poca informacion al respecto y, con esta ultima, realizar una pagina web (o en su defecto un CD con ella) para informar a la gente en general (aunque esta enfocada a jovenes de enseñanza media y primeros años de estudios superiores) y asi hacer conciencia de este grave proceso que afecta no solo al norte del pais, sino que sus efectos estan llegando hasta la decima region.

Cabe destacar que esto fue supervisado por dos profesores del departamento, los cuales solamente revisaron los manuscritos y nos ayudaron a ordenar nuestras idea, pero todo la informacion y la gran mayoria de las fotos, fueron aportadas por nosotros.

A modo de reflexion: aunque vivamos en el desierto mas arido del mundo no quiere decir que la "desertificacion" no nos afecte. En la naturaleza todo esta enlazado de cierta forma y cada pequeño cambio repercute y genera procesos devastadores.

Personalmente digo que CONAMA defraudo en el tema....no saben ni donde estan parados....sin embargo, CONAF y SERNAGEOMIN me prestaron ayuda desinteresada (acceso a documentos y fotografias), muchas gracias!

Estan cordialmente invitados a visitar la pagina (que ni siquiera es conocida dentro de la carrera), fruto del esfuerzo de un puñado de alumnos....

PD: para los que esperaban libros en pdf.....esta vez no hay...pero en la pagina encontraran una seccion con libros sobre la desertificacion. jejee!

En esta ocasion les traigo 2 libros, unos sobre las nunca bien ponderadas "diaclasas" que la gente de la catolica del norte las tiene archiconocidas (jajaja!) y otro sobre geofisica...

Les dejo tambien alguno interesantes lugares que visite durante mis vacaciones y que cualquier persona que viene a la III Region deberia visitar

Impacto de meteorito cercano a Puerto Viejo (S de Caldera)

Fui a ver esto ya que hacia como 15 años que no lo visitaba y ahora lo veo de otra forma, no como una mera atraccion turistica. Se accede por un sendero que sale desde Puerto Viejo o por otro sendero que queda en Playa Blanca (playa aledaña a Pto. Viejo)
El diametro del impacto es pequeño (ahi esta la vieja de escala) calculo unos 3m. y esta afectando rocas marinas tipicas de la zona, estas rocas marinas descansan sobre rocas plutonicas tipo dirita-granodiorita (a vuelo de pajaro nomas la clasificacion, no me detuve a mirar eso).

Quebrada Melendez (E de Tierra Amarilla)

Todos los que han estudiado la geologia de Chile deben de conocer el Grupo Bandurrias (continental) y el Grupo Chañarcillo (marina, fosilifera), esta ultima esta integrada por 4 formaciones: Abundancia, Nantoco, Totoralillo y Pabellon. La gracia de esta quebrada es que corta ambos grupos a lo largo de su cauce, por lo que visitarla es bastante didactico ( y mas si se llevan los mapas geologicos de la zona). No pude recorrerla en su totalidad debido a falta de tiempo, pero tiene bastantes cosas interesantes y es bien bonita, pero hay que ir con mucha agua y bien protegido contra el sol.
Se puede acceder a ella mediante 2 caminos uno que sale desde Tierra Amarilla (SE de Copiapó) que en realidad y lamentablemente es el camino para el vertedero municipal y para mas remate, la gente quema la basura en busca de alambres de cobre, por lo que cuando fui el olor era bastante desagradable y se extendia por gran parte de la Qda. El camino que accede desde Tierra Amarilla es bastante malo y solo se puede acceder mas alla del vertedero en vehiculos altos.
El segundo camino sale desde un costado de la planta Inacesa (al lado de la Fundicion Paipote) y se sigue derecho hasta donde hay un casco y un letrero de vialidad (pero que esta en un camino abandonado) muy arruinado que indica Qda. Melendez, luego se sigue por ese camino hasta llegar a una Qda. que desenboca en la Qda. Melendez, aunque el camino se une con el de la Qda. principal, el escaso trafico motorizado y las lluvias han arruinado totalmente el camino, por lo que despues de unos metros solo se puede seguir a pie.

Playa Verde Vertigo

Hermosa playa que queda al S de Caldera, en el camino que une esta ciudad con Pto. Viejo. No revelare su ubicacion exacta por respeto a la gente de la zona que no quiere ver una de las playas mas hermosas de Chile, sucia y contaminada, como ya ha sucedido con playas como Ramada y Rodillo.
El acceso a la playa se hace bajando el acantilado, por lo que solo se recomienda que gente joven-adulta, sin problemas de sobrepeso.
Aguas azules, tibias, arenas grises claras finas, hermoso paisaje son algunas de las caracteristicas de esta escondida playa; por cierto, mientras todas las playas en caldera y alrededores estaban plagadas de algas y medusas, esta playa nunca tuvo dichos problemas y se mantiene asi.
Como dato freak, en las cercanias de esta playa se filmo parte de el documental ¿Cuantos millones de años? (la parte de la falla).

Geologicamente, el acantilado muestra una sucesion estratigrafica regresiva muy clara (de arena ha conglomerados).

Granito Orbicular

Poco conocido atractivo geologico de la III Region, que se ubica a pocos kilometros al N de Caldera y se encuentra bien señalizado (como Santuario de la Naturaleza), por lo que es dificil pasar de largo. El camino de acceso es de tierra, de mediana calidad (bastante calamina, pero puede pasar un nissan V16 por el) y reccorre algunos cientos de metros hasta llegar a a la playa.
El afloramiento en tierra no es muy grande, pero por lo que pude ver, se extenderia algunas decenas de metros bajo el agua.
En el lugar hay un cuidador que tiene su cabaña, para prevenir robos de la roca, como ya ha pasado muchas veces, incluso con dinamita han sacado grandes trozos de ella.
La roca es extremadamente dura, recuerdo que una vez cuando chico trate de sacar trozos con un martillo geologico y no le hice ni cosquillas. Alrededor de los afloramientos se encuentran multiples clases de bolones de rocas, pero ninguna de granito orbicular (ya se los pelaron todos).

Para mas informacion geologica leean lo que dice el cartel que lo recive a uno cuando llega.

Hola amigos(as) que visitan este pequeño blog, como es fin de año y no hay mucho tiempo por el asunto de ir a comprar los regalos, los carretes y tantas otras cosas que nos quitan el tiempo durante esta fecha, no tengo grandes cosas para subir, pero si bastante interesantes, la primera es chikitita pero es muy util...aunque creo q todos los proyectos de geologo que visitan este blog deben tenerla (es un obligacion!) y si aun no la tienen o se les perdio (que es lo mas usual) les dejo la tabla del tiempo geologico veresion 2004....
El segundo aporte es uno que encontre en internet ahi...libreta para todo el mundo y al parecer no muchos lo tienen, no es precisamente un libro, sino que es la carta geologica de Chile a escala 1:1.000.000.

Todo el mundo que ya esta familiarizado con el uso de microscopios de luz transmitida sabe lo que son las conoscopicas y lo dificial que es al principio saber que figuras son, si es flash, obtusa al eje, bla bla bla. Webeando en los pc's del departamento encontre este archivo que en realidad don varios videos donde se muestran de manera animada cada una de las figuras para minerales biaxiales. El momento de poner esto es idealmente en el 1er semestre, que es cuando se imparte el curso de mineralogia optica y todos andan vueltos locos con la conoscopica aqui que la conoscopica aca jajaja....pero filo, lo subo ahora nomas.

Glaciología

Hola amigos y amigas, en el ultimo tiempo ha estado muy presente el tema de los glaciares dentro del departamento de geologia y se que el libro sobre el tema que subi hace algun tiempo ayudo a varias personas, lo cual es muy gratificante.
Aquel libro era muy general y no se centraba en alguna parte del mundo, por eso, hace algun tiempo encontre una pagina de la U de Chile (www.glaciologia.cl) sobre el tema, en la cual se entregaban varios articulos para descargar sobre varios topicos de los glaciares pero enfocados en Chile y en otras partes de Sudamerica. Yo baje todos esos articulos, los cuales subo ahora compilados en un solo archivo lo que es mas comodo de bajar. Estos articulos van desde 1999 hasta 2005.

Google Earth

Y vuelvo de las tinieblas con este libro llamado Hacking Google Maps and Google Earth, este librito nos lleva mas alla en el uso habitual que le damos al Google Earth y a otra herramienta menos conocida, el Google Maps. El libro en si es bien complejo, esta en ingles, y esta orientado a un uso no geologico del programa. Por eso lo coloco aca, ya que para lo unico que ocupamos el Google Earth es para mirar la morfologia de un terreno, fallas u otras caracteristicas, se que eso es precisamente lo que a nosotros nos interesa, pero nunca esta demas conocer otras cosas y abrir nuestra mente o darle otro uso al programa.

He vuelto luego de algun tiempo de inactividad, pero la U me deja poco tiempo para esto.
Por ahi en uno de los comentarios pidieron que subiese el material de las clases de Geoquimica Exogena que se imparte en la UCN. Este ramo trata sobre la geoquimica de todo lo que sea superficial, principalmente de arcillas y coloides. Tambien se trata en profundidad el tema de la meteorizacion y los suelos.

Aca les traigo una vez mas un libro de gran calidad y sumamente util para este ramito, se trata de nada mas ni nada menos de Spry, P., Gedlinske, B. - Tables for the Determination of Common Opaque Minerals del Economic Geology. Pal queno sepa, es un librito en donde sale importante informacion (en ingles) sobre las propiedades de los minerales de mena para asi poder reconocerlos al microscopio.

Eso, ojala les resulte util....la contraseña es la misma e siempre......Nos vemos...

Campo Cero

Campo Cero es una revista de los alumnos de Geologia de la UCN, pensada como un modo de difusion de esta a la comunidad. Actualmente se han editado 2 revistas, ambas en pdf, aunque la primera pudo ser impresa en papel (b&w) y puede ser encontrada en el CEAL de Geologia.

Pongo a su disposicion ambas revistas, para asi ayudar a la masificacion de esta:

Grafico v/s Formula

Durante el XI Congreso Geologico Chileno, un alumno de la UCN pregunto a uno de sus profesores el por que de la diferencia entre la formula de velocidad de las ondas al interior de la tierra (a grosso modo, V = SQR(resistencia/densidad) ) y el grafico que se presenta en muchos textos, el profesor respondio lo siguiente: "muy buena pregunta pero deberia investigarla". A todo esto, el alumno le pregunto a muchos futuros geologos y a geologos titulados con años de circo, de los cuales, ninguno dio con la respuesta.

Si consideramos que al profundizarse en la corteza terrestre las rocas se hacen mas densas, lo que deberia ocurrir es que en la formula el denominador se hiciese mayor y por lo tanto el cuociente disminuya, pero por que entonces los graficos que se entrega en los libros esta al reves (el cuociente aumenta con la profundidad)???. (aunque, matematicamente, la respuesta es obvia)

Geomorfologia de Glaciares

Hubbard, B., Glasser, N. - Field Techniques in Glaciology and Glacial Geomorphology

Luego de tener este blog medio botado arremeto con este libraco de mas de 400 paginas sobre la geomorfologia de los glaciares, tan de moda hoy en dia con esto de Pascua Lama y por el calentamiento global. Este libro esta en ingles (para variar) y contiene mucha informacion sobre la dinamica de los glaciares y como esta es reflejada en la morfologia final que ellos dejan. Los glaciares son un tema muy interesante por su importancia como "futuras" reservas de agua dulce, por lo que este libro espero que nos ayude a despejar las telas de araña sobre estos.

Por cierto no lo he leido, asi que no puedo dar una mejor opinion.

PROBLEMAS

El archivo "Structural Analysis" de Paor ha sido borrado debido a que el servidor donde alojo todos los archivos al parecer detecto que este programa tenia derechos de autor por lo que salia el siguiente mensaje al tratar de bajar cualquiera de las 2 partes: "The file is suspected of illegal or copyrighted content".

Por lo tanto, en los proximos dias tratare de arreglar el problema, sorry por el inconveniente.

Este programita no lo conocia y anoche me dieron el dato, como no lo he instalado, busque en internet y sale lo siguiente:

"PoleMic is a computer programme developed by Niels Hede Pedersen that identifies a mineral (you get a name) provided that you describe some of the optical properties of the transparent mineral as observed in thin section. PoleMic is designed to be used mainly for educational purposes in introductory courses on polarizing microscopy. If you are teaching the subject you may want to use it in class. If you are a student of the subject you may wish to install it to avoid the labour of leafing through mineral tables. PoleMic is used in an undergraduate course on polarizing microscopy at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Aarhus, Denmark."

Parece ser bastante util, para los que tiene optica mineralogica o petrografia microscopica, por lo que por eso lo pongo aca.

El primer aporte a esta causa

Mi compadre melame me mando este archivo anoche que se titula "Cuaderno de Practicas 2005-2006", siendo el primero en aportar!.

No es un libro propiamente tal, sino mas bien una extensa guia de 50 paginas que nos lleva desde el mundo mineral hasta la confeccionen de perfiles.
La primera parte se asemeja mucho a las guias de Geologia General 1 y de la parte de mineralogia del ramo de Cristalografia y Mineralogia que se imparten en la UCN.

La segunda parte es dedicada a la clasificacion de rocas sedimentarias, igneas y metamorficas, que se asemejan a las guias que se entregan en Petrografia Macroscopica.

Y finalmente la tercera parte (que pareciese ser la parte mas fuerte y extensa de este documento) esta dedicada a los mapas y perfiles geologicos.

Pienso que este documento esta ok para los estudiantes que recien se inician en las artes geologicas.

Solo queda agradecer a melame por el aporte.

W. M. White - Geochemistry (3 partes: (1) _ (2) _ (3))

Este es un libro sobre geoquimica que encontre navegando no se en que pagina, viene separado en muchos capitulos (obviamente en PDF) y esta en ingles (como la gran mayoria de la literatura geoquimica). No lo he revisado asi que no les puedo adelantar nada, asi que bajenlo y juzgen ustedes mismos y me avisan que tal.

El libro esta comprimido en 3 partes y no creo que tengan muchos ataos para poder bajarlos y luego descomprimir.
La contraseña es la de siempre.

Declan G. De Paor - Structural Analysis: An Interactive Course for Earth Science Students

Recuerdo que hace algunos años, buscando cosas en el emule encontre este archivo que no es precisamente un libro, sino que es un flash ilustrativo, en donde su autor, por medio de animaciones nos explica de forma muy didactica, la gran mayoria de los fenomenos estructurales. Son 18 capitulos donde el autor trata temas como las fallas, pliegues, analisis de stress y strain, reologia, indicadores cinematicos, etc. Todo explicado claramente y con muchas animaciones y fotos para entender aun con mas facilidad como se producen estos fenomenos.

Viene dividido en 2 partes, supongo que no tendran problemas para descomprimirlo. Cualquier problema lo comentan aqui mismo.

Por ciertos, esta en ingles, pero no creo que les traiga problemas ya que es muy instuitivo de usar y no hay que leer mucho, sino que mirar mas.

Aunque este blog lleva muy poco tiempo online (como 3 dias y 1 con libros) ya ha recibido varias visitas de conocidos personajes de la carrera de geologia de la ucn y es precisamente lo que yo queria que sucediese. Ojala los libros presentes aca sean de su agrado y lo mas importante, que les sirvan de algo...obviamente no pa andarse tapando de material del cual nunca leeran, como dice el dicho "el que mucho abarca, poco aprieta".

A medida que tenga tiempo seguire subiendo mas libros, de los cuales la gran mayoria esta en ingles (lamentablemente para algunos).

Ojala que esta uniciativa tome buen rumbo y que mas personas aporten libros o documentos (articulos extensos, boletines, cartas geologicas, cuadrangulos, memorias, etc) y asi, todos ganamos.

Si quieren opinar o colaborar con algun libro mandenme un mail y yo lo subire.
Recuerden que la contraseña para abrir los .rar es geologia_ucn_2000, ya que cierto personaje me pregunto por ahi cual era.

This Dynamic Earth - The Story Of Plate Tectonics[USGS]
Libro sacado de la pagina del USGS sobre la tectonica de placas, todavia no lo he leido, pero se ve interesante, ademas de que contiene imagenes de gran calidad y muy ilustrativas. Ojala les sirva de ayuda o como introduccion a la tectonica de placas....por cierto...100% en ingles.

Thompson & Turk - Introduction to Physical Geology
Libro introductorio a las ciencias geologicas tipo Holmes y Strahler, es muy vistoso, con muchas fotos espectaculares y a diferencia de los anteriores...es mas reciente. (idioma: ingles)

Este no es un libro propiamente tal, sino que es un bolitin del Sernageomin, en donde su autor hace un seguimiento a las obras de mitigacion que fueron propuestas por el sernageomin a las autoridades locales. Un boletin tremendamente interesante

Hans Niemeyer - Geologia Estructural, Vol. 1, Estructuras Fragiles
Libro guia que se utiliza en la UCN para el curso de Geologia Estrucutral dicatada por el mismo autor. Existe un segundo volumen que trata de las estructuras ductiles pero no he podido conseguirlo digitalizado.

Martinez C., J.R. - Geologia Estructural y Dinamica Global

Otro libro de geologia estructural en español, lo encontre por un dato que me dio un compañero que visitaba la web de geologia de la Universidad de Salamanca. Es muy parecido al anterior, solo que es mas colorido, se agrega unos capitulos de tectonica de placas y de analisis macro y microscopicos del strain en las rocas.
